Fill known positions and leave blanks as ? to find matching English words. Useful for hangman, crosswords, and Wordle-style grids of any length.

Letters lock a slot. Use ? or _ for unknowns.

How Patterns Work

Type one character per slot. Letters lock that position. ? or _ leave a slot open. Optionally force Must Include letters and Exclude greys, the same way the main solver does.

Example: C?A?E with Must Include R can surface words that fit a crossword stub where you already know C, A, E and have an R floating from a crossing.

When to Switch Tools

If you only know the letters in a bag and not the positions, use the home unscrambler instead. If length is fixed at five with greens and greys, use the Wordle hub.

Pattern lists for five-letter starts (for example words starting with S) are also linked from the length pages when you want an alphabetical browse.
