How Many Words Hide in a Seven-Letter Rack?

Seven tiles feel like a small hand until you start counting what is hiding in them. To find out how much is really there, we took every set of seven letters that spells at least one seven-letter word, 19,388 racks in all, and counted every word of two to seven letters you can make from some of those tiles.

The answer: a lot more than most of us find under a ticking clock.

The typical rack

  • Median: 65 words. Half of all seven-letter racks hide more than 65 playable words, half hide fewer.
  • Average: 71.6 words, pulled up by a handful of very rich racks.
  • Top 10%: at least 122 words.

So if you are finding ten or fifteen words in a round of Text Twist, the board is not stingy. You are leaving most of it on the table, which is good news, because it means there is a lot of room to improve.

The richest racks

These eight racks hide the most words. Each line shows the letters, how many words they hide, and the seven-letter words they spell.

  1. AEOPRST, 283 words: ESPARTO, PROTEAS, SEAPORT
  2. AELPRST, 281 words: PALTERS, PERSALT, PLASTER, PLATERS, PSALTER, STAPLER
  3. AEILRST, 277 words: REALIST, RETAILS, SALTIER, SALTIRE, SLATIER, TAILERS
  4. AEIPRST, 275 words: PARTIES, PASTIER, PIASTER, PIASTRE, PIRATES, TRAIPSE
  5. AEILPST, 259 words: APLITES, PALIEST, PLATIES, TALIPES
  6. AEINRST, 256 words: ANESTRI, ANTSIER, NASTIER, RATINES, RETAINS, RETINAS, RETSINA, STAINER, STEARIN
  7. ACEPRST, 250 words: CARPETS, PREACTS, PRECAST, SPECTRA
  8. AEIMRST, 249 words: IMARETS, MAESTRI, MISRATE, SMARTIE

Every one of them is built on the same core: A, E, R, S and T, with one or two of I, O, P, L, C and M added. A SEAPORT rack is basically a whole port of call: you can dock PROSE, SPORT, TAPER, PASTE, STORE, OPERA and a few hundred more.

The poorest racks

At the other end, some perfectly good seven-letter words leave almost nothing behind:

  • VIVIFIC hides just one other word: IF.
  • ZYZZYVA, a kind of weevil, hides AY, YA and YAY. At least it is cheerful about it.
  • TSKTSKS hides TSK, TSKS and TSKTSK, which is about the response you would expect.

These racks are heavy with repeated letters and rare ones, and that turns out to be the whole story.

Which letters make a rack rich

We split the racks by whether they contain a given letter and compared the median word counts:

  • Richest company: racks with an A or an S hide a median of 77 words. T is close behind at 75, then R at 74, E at 73 and P at 72.
  • Poorest company: racks with a Q hide a median of just 37 words. Z (42), J (44.5) and X (49) are not much better, and F and Y sit at 57.

A Q cuts the typical rack's options nearly in half, from 65 words to 37. That does not mean you should never hold a Q (it is worth 10 points in Scrabble), but it does mean a Q rack needs a plan, not a hope.

What to do with this

In Scrabble and Words With Friends, rack management is about keeping the rich letters and spending the poor ones. If you can play off a Z or a duplicate letter and keep A, E, R, S and T, your next rack is likely to be one of the rich ones above, which is where seven-tile bonus plays come from.

In Text Twist and Word Cookies, the rack is chosen for you, so the lesson is about search order:

  1. Find the full-length word first. It tells you which letters belong together.
  2. Peel off the obvious four- and five-letter words from it: in SEAPORT, that means PORTS, TAPES, ROAST, OPERA and their friends.
  3. Finish with the two- and three-letter scraps. In a rich rack there are dozens.

When you are stuck, remember that a rack built on A, E, R, S and T is almost never as empty as it looks. The median rack hides 65 words, and racks with an A or an S hide 77. The words are there; the clock is just louder than they are.

How we counted

We started from the ENABLE word list, a public-domain list used by many word games (172,823 words), and kept the 155,980 words that are also active on JumbleFix. A "rack" here is a set of seven letters that spells at least one seven-letter word in that list; there are 19,388 of them. For each rack we counted every word of two to seven letters that uses some of its tiles, with no tile used more often than it appears. Different words with the same letters count separately.
